In live from the South American jungle !

The campaign Inkari 2010 is finally launched ! As in 2009, thanks to the system Inmarsat and to the beacon of geo-localization Spot Televizio, of the european Telespazio, follow from day to day the headways of the expedition with the interface of Google Maps.

After an exceptional year of 2009, at the conclusion of which Thierry Jamin and the team of Inkari were able to officialize to Cusco, on February 11th of this year, the discovery of about ten extraordinary archeological sites of inca and pre inca origin, our explorers restart on the tracks of the lost city of the Incas. They are more than ever convinced to approach their purpose.

What reserves them this campaign 2010 ? According to Thierry, it promises some surprises and maybe also big progress on the forgotten history of the Incas in the Amazonian forest.

Be the first ones to discover the results of the expedition "Inkari 2010" by following on this Blog, from day to day, the progress of Thierry Jamin and his group...

Expedition 2

Results of the second expedition

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Dear Internet users and Friends,

Here we are of return of our second expedition in the valley of Lacco, on the tracks of archeological sites until then unknown, about which spoke to us certain inhabitants since a few months. We were not disappointed !

These twelve days of expedition indeed allowed us to confirm the existence of several inca sites, among which certain magnificent: Quellomayo Grande, Apucatina, Hatun Monte, Incaraccay, Cochapata, etc. We also returned to the city of Llactapata, the one that we had visited for the first time in May, 2009. A part of our group, as has already reported it to you our companion Loïc, was able to update the presence of impressive buildings in the heights of this little inca Pompéi.

I would not know how to describe you the delight and the emotion which were ours when we penetrated for the first time into the buildings and on the esplanades of Apucatina. I would not know how to describe you either which was our surprise by discovering the scale and the beauty of the ruins of Hatun Monte. What secrets still hide in the ruins of Cochapata, built around a lagoon ?

While hardly one year ago the name of Lacco was still unknown, we become aware of the incredible archaeological wealth of this new sacred valley of the Incas today. We discover lost cities everywhere where we go ! Of what inca big city depended these groups of citadels, terraces of culture or necropolises ?

We have to officialize at the moment as soon as possible, with the INC, the existence of all the sites discovered by our team since 2009 to Lacco, Chunchusmayo and Mameria. It is my task of coming days. We indeed have to put back to the National Institute of Culture our Final Report concerning our investigations in these three regions, as well as the totality of the archaeological material which we returned of our successive expeditions.

It is only while we can present a new project of search, concerning our next expedition in an area north-west which we collected for several months very important information susceptible to answer in a definitive way the mystery of the city lost by the Incas.

We shall not miss to hold you informed about the headways of the preparation of this third expedition.

Discovery of the Apu Catina site

We joined the Doris and Julio's house since Friday afternoon. A mean rain accompanied by a ferocious characteristic mist of the region immobilized us all the whole day.

José, remained back close to Llactapata waiting of mules bringing back the material, he didn't have any more chance because the mules promised by one of the inhabitants never arrived. We finally sent Mauro, one of our carriers accompanied by 3 mules, to help José to join our group yesterday in the morning.

The sun had succeeded in piercing mist what allowed us to leave to finish the exploration of Rimac Pampa immediately in company of our guide Julio.

Very few novelties met in this sector that appeared us promising yet. One finally met to use the machete intensely in a dense and damaged vegetation, unearthing small dwellings and walls however in a strong state of deterioration.

The discovery of the site of Catina Apu in the afternoon was more enjoyed. Perched to 2500 m on the "pampa", this site composed of about twenty buildings detected on 1 hectare (40 according to Julio) with a very original characteristic: the majority of the buildings had oval or circular rounded corners. A superb watchtower overhung the valley of Lacco, offering a view until the valley of Paucartambo.

It is the hour of the breakfast; to the menu spaghettis tomato sauce with the tuna, coffee with milk. That is necessary to attack this day dedicated to the exploration of the heights of Juy Huay situated on the return path.

The crop was very good

While dividing the team in two small groups, Thierry could complete the exploration of Llactapata while, I, accompanied Hermo with Edouard and Americano, living in the region that guided us through his property in the heights of Llactapata.

The first discoveries were modest, of the terraces by here, a small tomb by there and some dwellings. Hermo consigned all these data on his notebook while specifying the measurements, the GPS position, the width of the walls, the level of destruction, the type of architecture, the presence of niches.

Americano asked us to press a little the step, insistent on the fact that they had a lot more interesting things there higher. After a half hour to spin round the machete and to go on all fours for me, a huge building inca stood before us.

Walls 80 cm thick

It is the first time that I observed a building of type pirca kept to 80%, with its 4 walls curling the thick 2m50 and 80 cm, 10 trapezoidal dog houses of which a central niche of 65 cm high on 50 cm of depth, 3 doors of 1m65, nearly 23-m long on 8-m large. Can it be a military district according to Hermo? Then all followed each other very quickly, on the side of this mountain slice delimited of every quoted by 2 small canyons.

American indicated us the presence of a mushroom-shaped intact tomb, identical to those that Thierry could discover in Puccro in 2009. Whereas the roof of most tombs collapses, the one kept its original shape here thanks to the presence of moss that played the role of mortar. More of mummies inside evidently but a good half dozen of bats!

As usual, the deaths benefitted from across from the best exhibitions with magnificent views on the mountains and on the valley. We pursued the exploration while finding on our path many buildings situated to regular intervals with original features: from the niches to different heights and different sizes on a same wall, of the subdivisions within a same building, a wall doubled of another wall...

The nature added his own touch, with the presence of mushrooms bruise azure or green fluo. Al in all we counted about fifteen buildings situated over to 1km to the of Llactapata. Whereas Llactapata in account 150, what hit here, it is that those situated in the heights were all of imposing size.

Our objective was to reach the summit of the mountain but we'd have three hours over a beautiful golden rain caught us in the late afternoon. We remain in contact with Americano who informs us of the presence of sites even higher.

First day of exploration

We are since Sunday evening in the Lacco valey, after a journey of 8 hours from Cusco to  "Punta Carretera" the most advanced point of  the road in construction in Lacco. It is Herbert Cartagena that piloted the 4x4 ornamented of magnificent Inkari-SeD Logistique logos and fully loaded of supplies and materials and 8 passengers!

The 2 following days were dedicated to approaching Llactapata ("village in the mountain", this term designates at least 3 distinct places in the valley).

On the path we spent one night in Julio's house that had already helped us to localize during the first expedition some petroglyphs as well as an underground tomb on the site of "Rimac Pampa" of which (the mountain that speaks) we are going to complete the exploration shortly.

The basis camp- Photo : Loïc Devaux - July 2010

The hospitality of the Lacco people doesn't have once besides failed to the rule and we could install a small basis camp in the Don Donati's domain, having water and situated 20 minutes of Lacctapata.

This second phase of operation is turned decidedly toward the exploration of the heights of Lacco with in perspective the exam of a path inca situated on the crest. What will we find on its course?

Archaeological material

For the meantime the first search for of July 14 permitted us to discover an imposing Tambo (relay inca) offering the two quoted an impressive view on the Mapacho rio.

Around the tambo of numerous dwellings, 28 according to the owner, unfortunately greatly damaged. We decided not keep out the vegetation that finally constitutes the best protection for the ruins before a potential intervention of the INC for its restoration.

On the site, covered today with banana trees and plantations of coffees, we also found the sculpted stones of which the difficult role to certify had to be ceremonial.

The return to the basis camp was ornamented of a good surprise, the discovery of imposing terraces (andenes) of 70 high m of more than 2m on some places with the presence of tombs and 2 houses.

This morning, mist is again present, what is always a good news for the ascension because it protects us from the implacable sunbeams... under way therefore!

New departure

Dear Internet users and Friends,

And we leave ! After a short break, since the return of our team to Cusco, the campaign Inkari 2010 restarts again in the assault of forests and mountain ranges, in the direction of this valley of Lacco, so full of mysteries.

During our last passage in the region, in last June, several inhabitants have still indicated us the presence of numerous important archeological sites. It is really incredible ! This valley which seemed empty of any archaeological indices, there is a little more than year, shows itself of an exceptional wealth today !

On what important inca city, always unknown of the modern archaeology, depended these sites and these stony roads forgotten by the men ?

The departure of our team is planned for the next Sunday, July 11th. This expedition should last two weeks, in the term of which we should have a rather precise idea of the role of the valley of Lacco, as zone of contact, between the region of Cusco and that of Granpaititi.

More we progress in this region badly known of Peru and more we have the sensation to approach inexorably our main objective. We already prepare moreover the expedition of August, which will be the most important of this campaign 2010. It promises big novelties. But I shall talk again you of it...

In the meantime, I make an appointment with you in a few days, directly from Lacco, via the Blog of Inkari on 2010. We shall make you discover, above all the world, the marvels of these still unknown sites…

¡Hasta Muy Pronto!

Thierry Jamin
